I cannot send email to a Netlink-hosted address

The single biggest problem facing most internet users is the large and growing quantity of spam (unwanted, intrusive and often offensive email) getting into their mailboxes.
[Another serious problem is caused by email viruses or worms - additional measures (designed to block incoming email containing executable files) have been introduced because of these as of August 2003].

As part of a proactive policy to lessen the amount of spam arriving in our customer's mailboxes, Netlink Connect utilise various blocking lists on our mail servers. These lists consist of email addresses, mail servers, networks and host names which have been used to source unwanted email.

Legitimate mail servers can and do get on these lists at times. Except in the case of repeated complaints, or obvious policies in support of spammers, we will remove correctly* setup mail servers from these block lists upon request.
[*Correctly setup mail servers must have rfc compliant dns setup including reverse delegation AND must be configured to prevent all forms of third party relaying]

In general, we will not accept mail which has been directly sent from a dynamic IP address or a network used for broadband or dialup users. This means that some individuals or small businesses with their own mail servers will possibly not be able to send mail to our network.

There are several possible solutions:

  1. Have proper reverse resolution of your IP address implemented. This means that if your mail server has a hostname of mail.yourdomain.com.au then its IP address should also resolve to the same hostname (not, for example h233.dsl.mel.provider.com.au)
  2. Use your providers mail server as an upstream relay for your mail server. This means that your outgoing mail will actually appear to be coming from that server - so long as it is a correctly configured mail server of course!
We are finding (in Australia at least) that some providers of broadband/internet services cannot or will not help with option '1', however there is no reason not to use option '2' and most operators of small mail networks do it this way.

We would be very interested to hear from any mail server operators:

RBL Unblock Request

If you have come to this page because you have received a Mail Delivery Failure message then this means that your mail server or other hosts on the same network have been used to send spam to our network.
Typically, the error or bounce message will be something like:
"http://www.netlink.com.au/mailblocked.html - Blacklisted IP 192.68.10.1"
If you are trying to send legitimate mail to our network the please contact us via this special email address (this address is changed frequently - so please do not save it to your address book). Please copy (cut and paste) the full email error message into your mail to us.
